There is a persistent assumption in heavy industry: that large-scale manufacturing simply cannot work in a high-cost, heavily regulated state like California.

Robinson Helicopter Company disproves it every day, building world-class aircraft at its facility in Torrance, in Southern California.

Robinson's answer to the Californian challenge comes down to a single idea: vertical integration.

The company describes itself as the most vertically integrated manufacturer in aviation, and the image is a literal one — raw materials enter at one end of the facility, and finished helicopters leave from the other.

More than 85% of the parts needed to build an aircraft are produced in-house, across roughly 65,000 square metres of manufacturing space.

This model helps reduce dependence on the external supply chain and gives Robinson direct control over the quality and availability of components, an advantage that, for the operator, means greater stability in long-term fleet support.

A Model That Works

The video that takes us inside the Torrance facility shows how this scale is achieved through sophisticated automation and purpose-built machinery.

From gun drilling of drive shafts to the precision work of a machine dedicated solely to producing nuts, every stage is engineered to combine efficiency with repeatability.

Dense manufacturing cells, the assembly of gearboxes and tailcones, advanced metal forming: each is one piece of a process that culminates in the final assembly line and, above all, in production flight testing.

Every helicopter is flown before it leaves Torrance.

It is in this final stage that the whole process finds its purpose. An aircraft built to this degree of control, flight-tested before delivery and backed by a predictable spare-parts chain, is an aircraft on which a dependable maintenance programme can be built.

Robinson has manufactured in Torrance since 1973 and has now surpassed 13,000 helicopters delivered, figures that speak of an industrial continuity on which, downstream, our own daily work also rests.
